Flat Cut Letters for Fascias, Receptions and Interiors

Flat cut letters are cut from a single sheet of material, so every letter has a clean face and crisp edges but no hollow body. Sometimes called fret cut letters, they give a sign real presence and a slight shadow on the wall, while staying slimmer and simpler than fabricated lettering.

We cut flat letters in our own workshop from acrylic, aluminium and foamex, then fit them with our own team using a full-size template so spacing and alignment are exact.

Choosing the material

  • Acrylic: available in solid colours, mirrored and metallic finishes, with a polished or matt edge. A popular choice for receptions and fascias.
  • Aluminium: tough and lightweight, with a painted or brushed finish, well suited to exterior walls.
  • Foamex (PVC foam): light and economical, best for indoor use, short-term signs and painted feature lettering.
  • Layered letters: two materials bonded together, for example a coloured acrylic face on a contrasting backing, to add depth and an outline.

Thickness and how it reads

The thickness of the sheet changes how the letters look. Thinner material gives a subtle, refined finish for interiors viewed close up, while thicker material casts a stronger shadow and holds its shape better on larger outdoor letters. We match the thickness to the letter height and viewing distance, so small text stays legible and large names do not look flimsy on a big wall.

Fine serifs and very thin strokes can be fragile when cut, so for detailed logos we may suggest a slightly bolder outline or a backing panel to protect the shape.

Stand-off or flush fixing

Flat cut letters can be fixed flush to the wall with adhesive and locating pins, which gives a neat, flat look on smooth interior walls. Fixing on stand-off pins lifts the letters a short distance from the surface, creating a shadow line that adds depth and helps the lettering stand out against brick, render or patterned wallpaper. Stand-offs also hide small irregularities in older walls.

Either way, we make a paper template on site, check it for level and position, then drill through it so each letter sits exactly where it should.

Where flat cut letters work

They are a good fit for reception walls, office corridors, meeting room names, shop interiors and fascias where the building or budget calls for something clean and understated. On a shopfront they can be fixed directly to a painted fascia board or a tray panel, giving more dimension than vinyl lettering without the depth of a fabricated sign.

Flat cut, built-up or metal?

Flat cut letters are solid and slim. Built-up letters are fabricated with returns, so they have real depth and can be lit from inside. Metal letters cover stainless steel, brass and aluminium options in both forms. If you are not sure which suits your wall, our individual letters page compares the options, and free design with photo-realistic mock-ups lets you see them side by side on a photo of your building.

Looking after them

Acrylic and aluminium letters need little more than an occasional wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid solvent cleaners on acrylic, which can cloud the surface. Because each letter is fixed separately, a damaged letter can usually be recut and replaced on its own rather than remaking the whole sign.

Flat Cut Letters: Questions and Answers

What are flat cut letters?

Letters cut from one solid sheet of material such as acrylic, aluminium or foamex. They have a flat face and clean edges and are fixed flush to the wall or on stand-off pins.

Can flat cut letters be used outside?

Yes. Acrylic and aluminium are both suitable outdoors when fixed correctly. Foamex is best kept for interiors or short-term use.

Can flat cut letters be illuminated?

The letters themselves are solid, so they are not lit from inside. They can be lit by separate lighting, or you can choose built-up letters if you want the lettering itself to glow.
