Village Signs and Town Entrance Signs
A village or town entrance sign is often the first thing visitors see, and a point of pride for the people who live there. Whether it is a traditional carved sign on the green, a cast name plate at the parish boundary or a modern welcome sign on the approach road, it says something about the place.
We design and make village and town signs in our own workshop for parish and town councils and community groups, and install them with our own team.

Styles of village sign
- Carved or routed wooden signs, painted or left natural, often with an illustration of local character.
- Cast signs with raised lettering and borders, a traditional choice that lasts for many years.
- Printed aluminium panels for full-colour designs, crests and welcome messages.
- Twin-post or single-post entrance signs on the roadside.
- Decorative village signs on the green with a carved or painted scene.
Designing a sign the community will like
Village signs often involve a committee, a public consultation or a design competition. We can turn sketches, ideas or a winning entry into a practical design and present it on a photo-realistic mock-up in its actual location, which helps when sharing proposals with residents or council meetings.
Simple, bold lettering works best for signs read by drivers. Illustrations and crests can be more detailed on signs people walk past, such as on a village green.
Materials that suit the setting
Hardwood suits rural villages and conservation areas, and can be repainted or re-oiled over the years. Cast signs give a heritage look and are very durable. Aluminium panels are lightweight, easy to clean and good for full-colour artwork. Posts can be timber, painted steel or aluminium, and we design the footings to suit the ground and the size of the sign.
Consent and highways considerations
Signs beside a road may sit on land managed by the highway authority, and placing anything on the verge usually needs their agreement. Signs must not block sightlines at junctions or distract drivers. Some signs may also need advertisement consent from the local planning authority. Rules vary, so it is sensible to check with the highway authority and planning team early. We can provide drawings and specifications to support those discussions.
Installation and care
Roadside signs are installed with ground fixings sized for the sign and the site, and we can work with the council on any traffic management needed. Wooden signs benefit from periodic maintenance; cast and aluminium signs need only occasional cleaning. If an existing village sign has been damaged or has faded, it can often be refurbished rather than replaced.

Funding and timescales
Many community signs are funded through parish budgets, local grants or fundraising, and approvals can take several meetings. It helps to agree the design, location and materials first, then gather any permissions before ordering. We can provide a mock-up and drawings at an early stage to support grant applications and council discussions. Allow time for highways agreement where the sign is on a verge, and choose a fitting date that avoids the busiest road periods. Planning the whole process ahead means the sign can be unveiled at a community event or anniversary if that is the aim.
Village and Town Entrance Signs: Questions and Answers
Do village entrance signs need permission?
Usually some permission is needed. Signs on roadside verges generally need the highway authority's agreement, and some signs need advertisement consent. Check with both early; we can supply drawings to help.
Which material lasts longest?
Cast and aluminium signs need the least upkeep. Hardwood looks traditional and lasts well with occasional repainting or re-oiling.
Can you recreate or restore an old village sign?
Often, yes. We can refurbish a damaged sign or make a new one based on photographs of the original.
