Outdoor Business Signs for Buildings and Entrances

Not every business has a shopfront. Offices, industrial units, schools, surgeries and care homes still need outdoor business signs that tell visitors and deliveries they are in the right place, often from a road or car park some distance away.

We design, make and install exterior signs for whole sites, from the sign by the gate to the name high on the building.

Reading distance and visibility

An outdoor business sign is often seen from a moving car, a car park or the far side of a road, so it needs to be larger and simpler than people expect. We size lettering to the distance the sign will be read from, keep wording to the business name and the essential information, and choose colours that contrast with the wall or cladding behind them.

Position matters as much as size. Trees, parked vans, neighbouring signs and the angle of approach can hide a sign that looked fine on a drawing. On the site survey we look from the routes visitors actually use, then suggest where a building sign, an entrance sign or a post-mounted sign will be seen first. Where a site is used after dark, we also consider lighting, either illuminated letters or external lights, so the entrance is easy to find in winter.

Signs for every part of the site

  • Building-mounted signs: panels or letters on the main elevation, sized to be read from the road.
  • Entrance and reception signs: marking the visitor door clearly on large or multi-tenant buildings.
  • Gable and high-level signs: on end walls and upper storeys, visible across car parks and from passing traffic.
  • Post-and-panel signs: freestanding signs on one or two posts for site entrances, car parks and directions.
  • Car park entrance and parking signs: visitor bays, deliveries and one-way routes.

Materials that suit the weather

Outdoor signs face rain, sun and wind every day, so materials are chosen for that. Aluminium composite panels and aluminium trays are the usual base for building signs, with exterior-grade vinyl and laminates for the graphics. Built-up metal letters give a more permanent, architectural finish on brick or cladding. Posts and fixings are chosen for the ground and wind exposure of each location.

Access and installation by our own team

High-level and gable signs need the right access equipment and careful planning. Our own installation team carries out the work, arranging access suited to the building, and we survey fixing surfaces in advance so cladding, render or brick is fixed into correctly.

Planning a consistent site

When the entrance sign, the building sign and the car park signs are designed together, a site feels organised and easy to navigate. We plan the whole scheme on one free site survey and show it as photo-realistic mock-ups, so every sign uses the same colours, lettering and logo layout.

Outdoor Business Signs: Questions and Answers

What is the best material for outdoor business signs?

For most flat outdoor signs, aluminium composite or aluminium tray panels with exterior-grade graphics are the best balance of durability and appearance. Built-up metal letters suit businesses wanting a more premium, permanent finish on the building.

Do outdoor signs need advertisement consent?

Some do and some do not. Many modest non-illuminated business signs can be displayed with deemed consent, but illuminated signs, larger signs, high-level signs and signs on listed buildings or in conservation areas often need advertisement consent. Check with your local planning authority.
