Commercial Signage: Finding the Right Signs for Your Business
Commercial signage covers every sign a business uses to be found, guide people and stay safe, from the name over the door to the fire exit sign at the back. Most businesses need several kinds at once, and knowing which to start with saves time and money.
This page helps you work out what you need and points you to the right service. Every type below is made in our own workshop and installed by our own team.

Start with what the sign has to do
Before choosing materials, decide what each sign is for. Is it to be noticed from the road, to help visitors find a room, to promote an offer, or to meet a safety requirement? A sign that tries to do everything usually does none of it well. Listing the jobs first, then the places where each job happens, gives you a short, practical brief that a designer can work from.
The main types of commercial signage
- Exterior signs: fascias, projecting signs, building lettering and totems that tell people they have found you.
- Interior signs: reception logos, door and room signs, wall graphics and directional signs.
- Illuminated signs: lightboxes, lit letters and neon that keep you visible after dark.
- Digital signage: screens and video walls for content that changes often.
- Safety signage: fire exit, warning and mandatory signs set by your risk assessment.
- Vehicle graphics: livery that carries your brand wherever your vans go.
Keeping everything consistent
Customers notice when the sign outside, the van in the car park and the reception wall all look like the same business. Using the same colours, typeface and logo treatment across every type keeps the brand clear, and ordering several types together means one survey, one set of drawings and one installation programme.
From survey to fitting
Most projects follow the same path: a free site survey to measure and photograph the site, free design with photo-realistic mock-ups, sign-off, then manufacture and installation. Some signs need advertisement consent, particularly illuminated signs and signs in conservation areas, and that application can add time before manufacture starts. The overall timescale depends on the size of the project and on whether consent is needed, and we confirm it once the design is agreed.
Planning a whole site
For premises such as offices, schools, surgeries, warehouses or retail units, it helps to walk the route a visitor takes, from the road to the front door to the room they are visiting, and note every point where they need a sign. That list becomes the signage schedule and makes quotes easy to compare. Our commercial signage guide explains the options in more depth.
Getting quotes you can compare
When comparing signage quotes, check that each one covers the same things: the survey, design, materials, finishes, lighting, installation, access equipment and any consent drawings. A cheaper price can leave out installation or use thinner materials that will not last as long outside. Ask for a mock-up of the main signs on a photo of your premises so you can judge size and appearance, not only price. Our free site survey and free design with photo-realistic mock-ups give you a clear picture before you commit, and one point of contact from first visit to final fitting keeps the project simple.
