Sign Warranties and Guarantees: What They Cover

The three separate things being guaranteed

A sign involves manufacture, components and installation, and cover for each can come from a different place. The signmaker guarantees their fabrication and their workmanship on site. Component manufacturers warrant LEDs, drivers, films and laminates for their own periods. Printed graphics carry a fade expectation from the ink and laminate makers rather than the signmaker.

So a headline "guaranteed for years" is only meaningful once you know which of those three it refers to.

What is normally covered

• Fabrication defects: failed welds, seams opening, panels delaminating

• Finish failures not caused by damage, such as powder coating flaking prematurely

• Component failures within their warranty period, typically LED modules and drivers

• Installation workmanship: fixings, sealing and how the sign was mounted

• Electrical connection work carried out as part of the installation

Installation workmanship is the one to confirm explicitly. A sign that has moved or is staining the wall below its fixings is an installation issue, and cover is far easier when the same company made and fitted it.

What is normally excluded

• Accidental damage, vehicle impact and vandalism, which are insurance matters

• Storm damage beyond design conditions, and flood

• Damage from cleaning: solvent crazing on acrylic, scratching, pressure washing

• Alterations, additions or repairs carried out by someone else

• Failure of the building the sign is fixed to, such as a rotten fascia board

• Gradual, expected change: fair wear, natural patination on brass and bronze

That last group causes most disputes, so it pays to know at the outset what the sign is expected to do over time rather than assuming it will look new indefinitely.

Fade, and what to expect from print

Printed graphics do change in sunlight. A laminated print in a normal position holds colour for years; an unlaminated one on a south-facing frontage can shift noticeably within a season or two. Strong reds and deep blues are the most vulnerable pigments.

Reasonable cover therefore addresses premature or uneven fading, not all colour change. If colour stability matters — a brand where the exact red is the brand — say so at quoting stage, because it changes the material and laminate specification and, sometimes, the recommended construction.

LEDs and drivers

In illuminated signage, the diodes usually outlast the electronics. Drivers run warm and are the most common single failure, so ask two questions: what is the driver's warranty period, and is it accessible for replacement without dismantling the sign?

Also ask what a claim actually delivers. A component warranty may supply a replacement driver but not the labour or access equipment to fit it at four metres, so understand whether call-out and access are included, excluded, or offered under a separate maintenance arrangement.

Keeping your cover valid

Cover is generally conditional on the sign being used and maintained as intended. In practice that means cleaning it with mild detergent rather than solvents, not pressure washing it, not letting someone else modify or rewire it, and reporting faults promptly rather than after a winter of water ingress.

Keep the paperwork: the quote, the approved drawing, the specification, the invoice, and any handover documents. When a claim arises three years later, the specification is what establishes what the sign was meant to be.

Making a claim smoothly

Report it as soon as you notice, in writing, with photographs. For illuminated signs, take a picture after dark showing the fault, and note whether it is one section, one letter or the whole sign — that distinction usually tells the supplier whether they are bringing a driver or a module string.

Then agree access. Most warranty disputes are really about who pays for the platform, so establishing that at the point of order is worth more than an extra year on the headline period.

Questions to ask before you order

• Which parts does your guarantee cover: fabrication, finish, components, installation?

• Is installation workmanship included, and for how long?

• What are the driver and LED warranty periods, and are labour and access included?

• What do you consider fair wear on this finish and this print?

• What would invalidate the cover?

• Will you hold the specification and artwork on file for future repairs?
