Printed Awnings: Putting Your Brand on the Cover

6 min read

A printed awning is a standard awning whose fabric carries your name, logo or pattern. The branding usually goes on the valance, the strip hanging at the front, because that is the part people see face-on from across the road. The sloping cover can carry a larger logo, but it is seen at an angle and often from below, so it needs a bolder, simpler design.

Getting the wording and scale right matters more than the printing method.

Valance or cover: where the branding goes

The valance is shallow, so it suits a single line: the business name, perhaps with a phone number or web address. The cover is deep but tilted. A large logo works there; small text does not, because it is foreshortened when seen from the pavement.

If the awning retracts, remember the cover disappears when it is closed. Anything the business cannot do without, such as its name, belongs on the valance or on the fascia above.

Printed or applied

Branding is typically either printed into the fabric or cut from a separate material and applied. Printing handles full-colour logos, gradients and photographs. Applied lettering suits one or two solid colours and gives very crisp edges. Most suppliers will recommend one or the other based on the artwork rather than offering a free choice, because the fabric type limits what works.

Choosing colours

The fabric colour is the background for everything else, so choose it with the lettering in mind. Strong contrast reads best: dark lettering on a pale cover, or white on a deep colour. Stripes are traditional and eye-catching but compete with text, so keep branding on a plain panel if you want both.

Pale fabrics show dirt sooner; very dark ones absorb more heat, which matters over outdoor seating.

Artwork

Vector artwork, the same files a designer uses for a fascia sign, gives the sharpest result at awning scale. If you only have a low-resolution logo, it may need redrawing before print. We check files before production and will tell you if anything will not reproduce cleanly.

Care

Printed fabric is typically cleaned with a soft brush and mild soapy water, never a pressure washer, which can lift print and damage the weave. Let the cover dry fully before retracting it for any length of time, to avoid mould. Covers can be replaced on an existing frame if the business rebrands.

Briefing a printed awning

Before asking for a quote, gather four things: the width of the frontage, a photo taken from across the road, your logo files and the wording you want. Say whether the awning will be opened daily or left out most of the season, because that affects which fabric is suggested. If the building sits in a conservation area, mention it early; planners sometimes prefer muted cover colours and restrained lettering. We then produce a scaled visual showing the cover, valance and fascia together, so you can judge how the branding reads before anything is made. Changes after printing mean a new cover, so it pays to check spelling, phone numbers and colours carefully on the proof.

Common questions

Can you print a full-colour logo on an awning?

Yes. Full-colour logos are usually printed; one- or two-colour names can be printed or applied.

Can I change the branding without replacing the whole awning?

Usually. A new cover or valance can often be fitted to the existing frame, provided the frame is sound.

What should go on the valance?

Keep it to the essentials: the business name, and perhaps one contact detail. Anything more becomes hard to read from across the street.

Do you design the branding too?

Yes. We design, make and fit, so the awning artwork can match your fascia and other signs.
