GRP and Moulded Signs: What They Are and Why Use Them

How a moulded sign is made

A GRP sign starts with a pattern of the final shape. A mould is taken from it, and layers of resin reinforced with glass fibre are laid into the mould. When cured, the piece comes out as a rigid shell that reproduces every detail of the original. It is then hand-finished and painted.

Because the mould holds the shape, the same design can be produced more than once, which helps where matching signs are needed across several sites or where a damaged piece might one day need replacing.

Light but strong

The appeal of GRP is its strength for its weight. A moulded panel that looks like carved stone or cast metal weighs far less than the real thing, which makes fixing to a building simpler and reduces the load on the wall. It is also weather-resistant, so it suits exterior use.

What can be moulded

If a design has depth, undercuts or curves that would be difficult or expensive to fabricate from sheet material, moulding is worth considering.

Finishes

The surface of a GRP sign is finished by hand, which is what lets it imitate other materials. Options include replica gold leaf, aged patina and modern paint finishes. A crest can be given the look of weathered bronze; a pub sign can carry the depth and shine of gilded carving.

Where GRP makes sense

Heritage and period buildings, pubs and hotels with traditional branding, attractions and themed spaces, and any business whose logo only really works in three dimensions. It is also useful for architectural features that sit alongside signage — a moulded surround, a decorative panel, a sculpted element at an entrance.

Where something else is better

For a simple flat sign with printed or vinyl graphics, GRP adds cost without adding anything visible. Aluminium composite, acrylic or timber will do the job. Caring for a moulded sign

Once installed, a GRP sign needs very little. The material does not rot or rust, and its weather-resistant construction means an exterior piece copes with rain and sun. The painted finish is the part that ages, so a sign in a very exposed position may benefit from an occasional clean and, after many years, a refresh of the paint effect.

Because the original mould can be kept, damaged pieces can be reproduced rather than redesigned. For businesses with a signature sculpted logo or a heritage feature, that is a real advantage: the sign can be maintained for as long as the building uses it.
