Flex Face Signs Explained: Large Lit Signs Without Seams

How it is built

A flex face sign has three parts. An aluminium extrusion frame forms the box. Inside, LED backlighting fills the box with light. Across the front, a printed face made from tensioned fabric or PVC flex material is pulled tight by a tensioning system around the edge, so it sits flat like a drum skin.

Because the face is one continuous piece, there are no joins where sheets meet. On a sign several metres long that is the whole point: rigid acrylic or polycarbonate faces have to be made in panels once they pass a certain size, and the seams show when the sign is lit.

Why size is the deciding factor

For a small sign, a rigid face is perfectly good. Flex face comes into its own as signs get larger: long fascias on retail units, tall pylon faces, gable-end displays. The larger the sign, the more a seamless face improves the look, and the more a lightweight skin helps compared with heavy rigid sheets.

Curved profiles are also possible, because the face follows the frame rather than having to be formed itself.

Changing the graphic

The face is a print, so changing it means printing a new one and fitting it into the existing frame. Quick-change tensioning systems are designed for exactly this. It makes flex face a sensible choice for businesses that rebrand, run seasonal campaigns, or lease a unit and may need to change the name for a new occupier while keeping the box.

Single or double sided

Flex face boxes can be single sided, fixed flat to a wall, or double sided, mounted on a post or projecting from a building so the sign can be read from both directions. Double-sided units are common on totems at the entrance to a site.

Where another sign would be better

• If your brand relies on raised, dimensional lettering, a flat printed face will never look the same. Built-up or halo-lit letters are the better fit.
• On a heritage building or in a conservation area, a large lightbox may not be acceptable at all; a painted board with a trough light is more likely to be.
• For a small shop fascia, a well-made panel sign is often all you need.

Brightness and evenness

The quality of a lit sign is judged by how even it looks: no hot spots near the lights, no dark corners. That depends on the depth of the box, the spacing of the LEDs and the translucency of the face material, all of which are specified together at design stage rather than picked separately.

Large lit signs need a proper look at the building: the structure the frame will fix to, the power supply, access for installation and any consent needed for illumination. We survey before manufacture, make the sign in our own workshop and fit it with our own team.
