Corporate Signage: Keeping a Brand Consistent Across Every Sign

7 min read

Corporate signage succeeds when a visitor can tell, without reading a word, that every sign belongs to the same organisation. That comes from a written sign standard: one document setting out the logo sizes, colours, typefaces, materials and fixing details for each type of sign. Without one, every new sign becomes a fresh guess, and the brand slowly drifts.

What a sign standard contains

  • The logo versions allowed on signs, and the minimum clear space around them.
  • Exact colour references for paint, vinyl and illuminated faces, since each matches colours differently.
  • One or two typefaces, with sizes for headings and directions.
  • A drawing for each sign type: building letters, entrance sign, reception logo, door plate, directional panel.
  • Materials and finishes for each, so a replacement matches the original.

Brand guidelines written for print and screen rarely cover this. Signs need their own section, because metal, acrylic and light behave differently from paper.

Colour is the hardest part

A brand colour that looks right on a website can look quite different as a painted fascia, a printed vinyl or a lit panel at night. Most sign makers match to a colour reference and produce samples before a big order. It is worth approving a physical sample of each material once, then recording the result in the standard.

Reception: where the brand is judged

The reception wall is the sign most visitors look at longest. Built-up or flat-cut letters, halo lighting, or a logo on glass are the usual choices. The finish should match the building rather than fight it: brushed metal in a glass office, painted letters on a warm timber wall.

Several sites, one look

Consistency is hardest when sites differ in size and age. The answer is to fix the proportions and materials in the standard and let the size flex. A small branch gets smaller letters, not different ones. Working with one supplier for every site also helps, because the same workshop makes every sign to the same drawings. We work across the UK for exactly this reason.

Planning for change

Companies rename departments, move floors and occasionally rebrand. Door plates and directories with replaceable inserts make small changes cheap. For a full rebrand, keep a register of every sign on every site; it turns a daunting project into a schedule.

Auditing what you already have

Most organisations already own dozens of signs, bought at different times from different suppliers. Before commissioning anything new, walk each site and photograph every sign, noting its location, size, condition and whether it still matches the brand. The audit usually shows three groups: signs that are fine, signs that can be refreshed with new vinyl or inserts, and signs that need replacing. Starting with the third group spreads the budget sensibly and avoids throwing away items that still work. Keep the photographs with the sign standard; they become the baseline for every future order and make it far easier to brief a supplier accurately.

Common questions

What is corporate signage?

It is the signage an organisation uses across its buildings, designed to a common standard so every sign carries the same brand.

Do our brand guidelines cover signs?

Often only partly. Sign-specific details such as materials, illumination and fixing are usually missing and are worth adding.

Can you work from our existing brand guidelines?

Yes. We design from your guidelines and will point out where a sign needs something they do not specify.

Can you roll signage out across several sites?

Yes. We design, make and fit in house and work UK-wide, so every site is made to the same drawings.
