Car Park Signage: Layout, Visibility and Installation

Before the entrance

The first job is to tell drivers they have arrived and which way to turn in. A freestanding totem or post-mounted sign at the entrance does this, and it needs to be large enough to read from the road with a moment's notice. If the car park serves several businesses, a directory panel with replaceable entries saves remaking the sign when tenants change.

Routes and one-way systems

Once inside, drivers need to know where they can go. Directional signs at each decision point — not before, not after — keep traffic moving and stop people reversing out of dead ends. Keep messages to a word or two and an arrow. Consistent colours for different zones help in larger sites.

Bays and restrictions

Reserved, visitor, accessible, loading and staff bays each need identifying, usually on wall-mounted or post-mounted panels at the head of the bay. Any restrictions or conditions of use should be stated plainly and positioned where drivers see them before they park, not after.

People on foot

Once people leave their cars, they become pedestrians looking for the entrance, the pay point or the lift. Pedestrian routes and crossings should be signed separately from vehicle routes and at a lower height, where people on foot are looking. Safety signs for hazards, speed limits and emergency information follow recognised standards; our safety signs meet BS 5499 and ISO 7010.

The way out

Exit signage is often forgotten until drivers are circling. Mark the exit route clearly from every part of the car park, and where there are barriers or payment machines, sign them in advance so drivers are ready.

Materials and mounting

Car park signs take a battering from weather and the occasional vehicle. Aluminium and stainless steel stand up well, with post-mounted, wall-mounted and freestanding options depending on the location. Modular systems with replaceable panels make updates simple. Vandal-resistant and anti-tamper fixings are available where signs are exposed.

After dark

Many car parks are busiest in winter evenings. Signs need to remain readable under the site's lighting, and entrance signs may justify their own illumination. Reflective materials help signs pick up headlights. Photoluminescent safety signs are available for emergency routes.

Keeping the scheme up to date

Car parks change: tenants move in and out, bays are reallocated, routes are altered. Signs built on modular, updateable systems with slot-in panels can be changed without replacing posts or frames, which keeps the whole scheme consistent year after year.

Keep a simple record of every sign, its position and its message. When something changes, it is then easy to see which panels need updating. Damaged signs should be replaced promptly, because a missing sign at a decision point sends drivers the wrong way and a damaged safety sign may no longer do its job.
