Business Nameplates: Materials, Wording and Fixing

6 min read

A business nameplate is a small plaque, usually beside an entrance, carrying the organisation's name and sometimes its services, floor or opening hours. The usual materials are brass, stainless steel, acrylic and cast metal. Choose the material to suit the building, keep the wording short, and decide early whether names on it will change.

Where nameplates are used

Professional offices, medical and dental practices, solicitors, accountants, and shared buildings with several tenants all rely on nameplates. On a period building a plate is often the only sign the planners will accept, and on a busy street it confirms to a visitor that they are at the right door.

Choosing a material

  • Brass: traditional and warm, suits period buildings. Unlacquered brass darkens over time unless polished; lacquered brass holds its shine longer.
  • Stainless steel: modern and low-maintenance, suits contemporary entrances.
  • Acrylic: lightweight and available in any colour, often used with stand-off fixings for a layered look.
  • Cast bronze or aluminium: raised lettering with real depth, for a plate intended to last decades.

Engraving, etching and applied lettering are the usual ways the wording goes on, and the right one depends on the material.

What to put on it

Name first, then only what a visitor needs at the door: perhaps the type of practice, the floor, or a buzzer instruction. Phone numbers and long service lists are hard to read at a doorway and date quickly.

Plates for shared buildings

Where several businesses share an entrance, a directory board with individual strips or slide-in panels saves replacing the whole sign every time a tenant changes. The same idea works on a practice plate that lists individual professionals.

Fixing

Plates are typically fixed with concealed fixings, visible decorative screws or stand-offs that hold the plate slightly off the wall. On listed buildings, fixings into mortar joints rather than stone are often preferred, and consent may be needed. We make nameplates in our own workshop and can fit them as part of the job.

Sizing and positioning

A nameplate is read standing still, usually from one or two paces away, so modest sizes work well; the main thing is that the name is legible without leaning in. Mount it at roughly eye level beside the door on the side of the handle, where visitors naturally look. On a shared entrance, align every tenant's plate to a common grid so the doorway looks ordered rather than cluttered. Consider lighting too: a plate in a dark porch may need a nearby light to be readable in winter afternoons. Where there is an intercom panel, keep the plate close to it so visitors can match the name to the button quickly and without confusion.

Common questions

How should a brass nameplate be cleaned?

Lacquered brass only needs a wipe with a soft damp cloth; metal polish can strip the lacquer. Unlacquered brass can be polished regularly with a brass cleaner to keep its shine, or left to darken naturally if you prefer an aged look on a period building. Avoid abrasive pads on any finish.

What material is best for an outdoor nameplate?

Stainless steel, lacquered brass and cast metal all handle outdoor use well. The best choice depends on the look of the building.

Can names be changed on a nameplate?

Yes, if it is designed with slide-in or replaceable strips from the start.

Do nameplates need planning permission?

Small plates often do not, but listed buildings and conservation areas have their own rules. Check with your local planning authority.

Do you make nameplates to order?

Yes. We design and make nameplates in house and fit them UK-wide.
